Air fried tofu is made by cooking cubes or slices of tofu in an air fryer until they’re golden and crispy on the outside, yet tender inside. After pressing to remove moisture, the tofu is seasoned with soy sauce, garlic, and onion, then air fried at a high temperature for 12–20 minutes. This flavorful method uses little oil and yields a protein-rich addition to salads, bowls, or wraps.
Air Fried Tofu
Ingredients
1 block (14 oz) firm or extra-firm tofu
2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
1 tablespoon olive oil (or sesame oil for extra flavor)
1 tablespoon cornstarch or arrowroot powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Optional: 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast for extra flavor
Method
Remove the tofu from its package, drain the water, and gently press the tofu using a tofu press or wrap it in paper towels. Place a heavy object on top and let it sit for 15-20 minutes to remove excess moisture.
Slice the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes (about 3/4-inch pieces).
In a large bowl, gently toss tofu cubes with soy sauce, olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and nutritional yeast (if using). Let the tofu marinate for at least 10 minutes for best flavor.
Sprinkle the cornstarch over the marinated tofu and toss until all pieces are evenly coated. This step helps create a crispy texture.
Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 2-3 minutes. Arrange tofu cubes in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Air fry for 12-15 minutes, shaking the basket or flipping the tofu halfway through, until golden and crispy.
Enjoy immediately as a snack, in salads, grain bowls, stir-fries, or with your favorite dipping sauce.
Tips and Variations
For extra flavor, add a teaspoon of sriracha or your favorite hot sauce to the marinade.
Try different seasonings like smoked paprika, curry powder, or lemon pepper.
If your air fryer is small, cook tofu in batches to avoid overcrowding.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer for a few minutes to restore crispiness.
Serving Suggestions
Add to rice bowls with steamed veggies and a drizzle of teriyaki sauce.
Toss with stir-fried vegetables and noodles.
Serve as a protein-packed snack with spicy mayo or peanut sauce.
