Sofritas is a delicious and flavorful dish made with crumbled tofu that’s marinated and cooked in a spicy sauce. Sofritas have a smoky, slightly tangy taste and a texture similar to ground beef, making them a great meat substitute in burritos, bowls, tacos, and other dishes.
Sofritas
Ingredients
1 block (14 oz) firm tofu, drained and pressed
2 Tablespoons olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 bell pepper (any color), chopped
1 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce
1 tablespoon adobo sauce, more if needed
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon soy sauce or tamari
Water if needed
Method
Crumble the pressed tofu into a bowl, breaking it into small, bite-sized pieces.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper, sautéing until softened (about 5-7 minutes).
Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
Stir in the crumbled tofu, chipotle pepper, adobo sauce, ground cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for about 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tofu is heated through and slightly crispy.
Add the soy sauce and continue cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary.
Remove from heat and garnish with fresh cilantro if desired.
Serve sofritas in tacos, burritos, or over rice bowls.
