Cheese Pupusa, El Salvador’s beloved stuffed corn tortillas, are adored for their comforting flavor and versatility. Traditionally filled with cheese, beans, or pork, they can be easily made at home using masa harina, water, cheddar cheese, and oil.
Cheese Pupusa
Ingredients
3 cups masa harina
1 1/12 cups water
½ cup cheddar cheese, grated
Oil for frying
Method
Mix masa harina with water to form a soft, non-sticky dough. Rest for 10 minutes under a damp cloth.
Divide dough into 8 balls. Flatten each ball into a disk.
Place a spoonful of cheese in the center, fold dough around filling, and flatten again into a thick disk.
Heat oil in a skillet over medium. Fry pupusas 2–3 minutes per side until golden and cooked through.
Serve hot—enjoy as is or with slaw and salsa.
