Hamburger Chow Mein

Hamburger chow mein is a comforting fusion of American and Chinese cuisines. Ground beef is cooked with vegetables like celery, onions, and carrots in a savory sauce of soy, garlic, and ginger. The mixture is thickened and served over crispy chow mein noodles or rice for added texture.

Hamburger Chow Mein

Ingredients

  • 1 pound hamburger (ground beef)

  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

  • ½ onion, diced

  • 5 stalks celery, diced

  • 1 red bell pepper, diced

  • 1 carrot, julienne

  • 1 cup flour

  • ¼ cup soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced

  • 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon chicken base

Method

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion, celery, red bell pepper, and julienned carrot. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until vegetables begin to soften.

  2. Add the minced garlic and ginger and cook for another minute until fragrant.

  3. Add ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until it is fully browned and cooked through.

  4. Sprinkle the flour over the meat and vegetables. Stir well to coat and cook for 2-3 minutes. This will help thicken the chow mein mixture.

  5. In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce and chicken base with 1½ cups of water (or according to package instructions for chicken base). Pour this mixture into the skillet.

  6. Stir everything together, making sure there are no lumps of flour. Simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the vegetables are tender.

  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot over chow mein noodles, rice, or crispy noodles.

Serving Suggestions
